Reception and party venue

The Museum of Zoology is now closed for refurbishment and as such is unavailable for hire. We plan to reopen in 2016.

Founded in 1814, the Museum displays a wide range of recent and fossil animals, illustrating the diversity of the animal kingdom. The collections are housed in a spacious modern building on two floors. The Lower Gallery presents a striking array of mammals and a near-comphrensive display of British birds. The Upper Gallery houses systematic displays of the major animal groups, exhibits that trace the origin and evolution of land vertebrates, including dinosaurs, and a collection of beautiful shells.

The galleries are available for hire on weekdays outside our public opening hours. The income derived from the hire of the galleries is used to support the Museum’s work, which is to preserve the collections and make them accessible to the general public, to students and to researchers. Income is also used to host special exhibitions and educational events.

Facilities

Receptions are usually based in the spacious Lower Gallery, with unrestricted access to the Upper Gallery at all times. The Museum is suitable for drinks and buffet receptions. The galleries can be arranged to accomodate smaller groups or up to 250 guests with equal comfort but the design of the building means we cannot accomodate seated dinners.

The galleries are fully accessible by ramp and lift for guests with restricted mobility. Lavatory and cloakroom facilities are available. Audio-visual facilities for presentations are available on request. For more lengthy presentations, it is possible to hire a fully-equipped lecture theatre just 20 metres from the Museum.

Parking for guests is available in the Grand Arcade multi-storey car park, only 100 metres from the Museum. The Museum is two minutes from the centre of town, bus station, park and ride stops and taxi ranks.

Smoking is not permitted in any part of the Museum.

Charges

Hire charges do not include catering which must be arranged independently by the hirer. Access for caterers and event organisers is available from 5pm. It is suggested you allow at least 30 minutes to set up your event before guests arrive. It may be possible to set up your event before 5pm.

Hire charges are dependent on the time your event ends.

Special rates apply to events at weekends. Reduced rates are available for departments of the University of Cambridge and allied institutions. Please contact the Museum Administrator for further information on  umzc   zoo cam ac uk

Catering

Because of the specimens on open display, we regret that red wine cannot be served in the Museum, but there are no restrictions on white wines, light beers, soft drinks and buffet-style food. Any food to be served has to be brought in ready-prepared by your chosen caterers: the Museum does not have food preparation facilities.

The Museum has preferred caterers who are familiar with the constraints which the building and regulations impose. All catering arrangements should be made confirmed with the Museum ten working days before any event takes place.
